It takes a special type of person to be a life coach. It can be very rewarding to help people to move forward in their lives and identify and overcome what is holding them back. From a logistical standpoint, life coaching can also seem like a dream job since you can often set your own hours and possibly work from home.
However, it takes other qualities to not only be a good life coach, but to enjoy life as a life coach. Here are some signs that life coaching may be for you.
You enjoy helping others. This one is a given. If you don’t care about the interests of others, there is no point in getting into the coaching profession. But if it makes you feel good to see others accomplish their goals, you could be on the right track.
You are someone people gravitate to for advice. If your friends and family are already asking you for your input into their life decisions, they likely see those life coach qualities in you. Often others recognize our true potential before we recognize it ourselves.
You are patient. This one is important. Coaches must recognize that everyone moves forward at his or her own pace. Some people may be ready to get to the finish line; others will need more coaxing from you to get there. If you are an impatient person, you may become frustrated if you can’t help a client as soon as you think you should be able to. Remember, slow and steady often wins the race.
You love personal development. To be a good coach, you must be committed to the self-development of others — and of yourself. You likely enjoy reading self-help books and taking personal development courses. You are a wealth of knowledge and you want to share that knowledge and wisdom with others.
You enjoy people. If you’re going to be a coach, you’re going to be spending time with people. Even if you do your coaching sessions via phone or Skype, you’re still interacting and you’ll need some social skills.
You’ve overcome major hurdles in your own life. Some of the best life coaches are those who have lived and learned. That doesn’t mean you can’t be young; it just means that you are able to take your personal experiences and channel the wisdom that you learned through them into helping others.
Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to others while creating a fulfilling career of your own. If you’re interested in learning more, consider going through a life coach certification program. You owe it to yourself to pursue the career that’s in alignment with your soul’s calling.
